Coronado Municipal Golf Course Coronado Island - One of the few golf courses in San Diego with the distinction of up close, ocean/bay front scenery is the Jack Daray Jr and Stephen Halsey designed course on Coronado - one of San Diego’s top municipal golf courses with affordable green fees. Go Golf San Diego’s Course Review with some hole-by-hole commentary You need to start of strong at Coronado. Accurate driving and quality approach shots on the front nine will leave you in good position to score as you are given more opportunities. There are some very reachable Par 5s on the front side that can give you birdie opportunities. Cash in on these chances and you’ll be rewarded. From the tips, the first hole is a slight dog leg right with some water to the left. A good tee shot will give a chance to get your approach shot close for a birdie. The second hole is your chance to get a quick birdie. The hole sets up perfectly for a right to left tee shot and with a long iron approach shot in. It’s better to be short on this green than to go long on this approach shot because of the water hazard. Holes three and four are also good birdie opportunities. Just don’t go right on either hole as the third hole hugs the SD Harbor and the fourth hugs SD’s Coronado Bridge. Hole number five is a smooth approach shot away from par. Even though number five is the 17th most difficult hole on the course, it’s not a birdie friendly hole. Holes six, seven, and eight at Coronado are a challenging of par 4s with a mixture of fairway bunkers, green-side bunkers, and water hazards. The approach shot on number eight is better to be right because anything slightly left of the green will end up in the water. The finishing hole on the front nine at Coronado Golf Course is a beautiful par 3 with a tee shot over the water hazard to a large green. Just put your tee shot on the dish on this hole and the call to the snack bar for your hotdog and cold one. Don’t risk a water penalty here, you’re hotdog will taste better. Onto the back nine at Coronado with some beautiful views of the Hotel Del Coronado and the Coronado yachts in the bay. Your first three holes on the back nine will feature two par 4s and a par 3, which is the easiest hole on the course. Settle for pars on these holes and you may have missed an opportunity to make up some strokes. Gather yourself now for a challenging, yet manageable par 5. Depending on the wind (which will make this hole more difficult) you have to plan on reaching this hole in regulation. If you take a bogey or worse on this hole don’t let your round go. They’ll be more opportunities. One of the signature holes on this course is number 16 with the yachts to your right and a slight dog leg right. Now it’s time to pull out the driver and roost your tee shot over the water. If successful, you’ll be rewarded with a short chip shot. Two holes left. Soak up the views and take in the surroundings because Coronado is special. Finish up with some makeable pars and you’ll be in the clubhouse a happy golfer. Coronado is a fantastic municipal golf course and a signature course in San Diego. If you are able to make a tee time (pay the extra fees to get a preferred tee time as it’s worth the money), you’ll be handsomely rewarded with one of the best golf experiences of your life.
